Distinguished and Famous people from Gayndah
📚 Leah Trott
Gayndah educator Leah Trott was named the town’s Citizen of the Year in 2022, recognising 24 years of community service. Her nomination described work as a teacher, coach, sporting official, grant writer and volunteer, with executive roles on school, sporting and community committees. Her daughter Lauren received the Young Citizen of the Year award in the same year. Queensland’s school directory also records Leah’s professional connection as principal of Gayndah State School. The paired civic awards made 2022 a particularly memorable year for the family.
🌾 Bob Russell
Bob Russell acquired a property near Gayndah through a ballot, improved it and sold it in 1932. This was an early venture in a business life that ranged from grazing to aviation and sugar manufacturing. Born in Scotland, he had migrated to Australia in 1923 and learned station work before buying land himself. Later he became a wartime transport pilot and chairman of Pioneer Sugar Mills. Gayndah’s link is the specific property venture, rather than a claim that the town was his birthplace or permanent home. It records an early attempt to turn pastoral experience into an independent business.
